Men are Trying to Look More Masculine and This is How They're Doing It

Young men are seeking age preventative treatments that keep them looking youthful and masculine. More men are seeking enhancements of signature masculine features such as defined cheeks, chin and/or jawline to boost their confidence. In the past, customized implants were a one-and-done treatment to build the underlying anatomy and structure the male face. However, with non-invasive cosmetic options such as soft tissue filler injections (eg hyaluronic acid, Bellafill), Sculptra (poly-L-lactic acid), autologous fat injections, and stem cell and platelet rich plasma (PRP) therapy, jaw and chin implants are becoming less commonplace.

Men desire a defined, square jaw but may not necessarily be ready for the commitment and cost of something permanent like a facial implant. Soft tissue fillers and Sculptra have long been go-to for women looking to enhance their features and fill wrinkles and folds in order to feel better about their appearance. Now men have caught on... and they LOVE it!

They Are Calling it the 'Model Makeover'.

Over the past three years, Dr. Emer has seen a huge influx in male patients coming in with photos of male celebrities and models to document the ideal, perfectly symmetrical and defined bone structure. They are desiring subtle changes to their facial structure in order to look more masculine or 'modelesque'. But what is it about a man's features that help him look more masculine aside from the obvious (muscles)? Most of these celebs and models have a few things in common. And just FYI, they aren't always god-given:

I'm Sold, How Do I Look Like That?

Dr. Emer uses a combination of minimal downtime injectable treatments to enhance a man's features in a subtle way. The goal is to ensure that his patients don't walk out with that 'done' look. Nobody should look like they've had work done. Expertly placed filler to the chin, jawline, temples and upper cheeks can create a contoured, masculine facial structure on any male seeking a more striking look.

What Kind of Filler Can Be Used?

  1. Juvederm Voluma, Juvederm Vollure, or Restylane Defyne/Lyft for the cheeks. Juvederm and Restylane are HA (hyaluronic acid) fillers that typically last 9-12 months or more and are reversible. Juvederm Voluma is used in the "mid-face" or cheeks to address volume loss that occurs with age. Although they can be used elsewhere on the face to fill deeper wrinkles and folds like nasolabial folds (smile lines). In most instances, Dr. Emer strategically places the filler into the medial or midline portion of the cheek to give the cheek lift without much increase in size, but also placing it laterally on the cheekbone to enhance the definition and accentuate the lift. Although other fillers exist, they aren't reversible in this area such as Bellafill, Radiesse or Sculptra. These are still viable options in the hands of an expert injector. One of the best techniques is to give multiple, small injections on the bone to give lift and contour to the cheek. In men specifically, filler is placed medially and superiorly around the eye to give it a square look, unlike women where the filler is placed laterally to give an elongated or elevated look. Dr. Emer will then layer fillers above the bone in the fat and skin layers to give the cheekbones their final structured shape. Small threads of volume are placed under and around the eyes and nasolabial folds to finely define the area.

    2. Sculptra for the jaw, temple and chin. Sculptra is injectable poly-L-lactic acid, made from the same material of internal sutures that are used to lift and tighten skin during facial surgery. It's a collagen stimulator (AKA biostimulatory filler) that tells the body to naturally produce its own collagen after injected. Results are not seen for months after injection, so a series of initial treatments closer together (every 4-6 weeks) are performed and then an optimal lifting and correction (eg volume improvement, wrinkle reduction, skin tightening, or improved contour) maintenance treatments are performed then at 6-12 month intervals. The amount that is needed depends on your initial starting point.

For more volume and filling, more vials and treatments are needed. For example, to build a very squared off jaw, numerous treatments may be needed in combination with other fillers. However, for subtle lifting or contouring of a cheek or chin, a few treatments may be all that is needed with or without other soft tissue fillers. Sculptra is often layered when injected into the tissue. The initial injections are placed on bone and then layered on top in the fat layers. Each injection stimulates the body to produce more collagen and can even stimulate bone. Some patients report a "Sculptra glow" after a series of Sculptra injections in conjunction with skin care, laser treatments, or peels and microneedling. The skin itself becomes more radiant due to the constant stimulation of growth factors and collagen stimulated by this product. Not only will your facial contours be defined, your skin will look brighter and gorgeous after treatments. Sculptra is reported to last 2-3 years or more at optimal correction.

    3. Radiesse for the jaw, temple, and chin. Radiesse is a soft tissue filler made of calcium hydroxylapatite crystals in a carboxymethylcellulose base (sugar) used to plump the skin. Larger volumes placed in the fat or bone can lift the skin and give significant changes immediately in facial contours. Radiesse filler is one of the thickest so it's best placed on the bone to hold up tissues and give significant lift. This is great for anatomical places such as the cheeks, temples, chin, and jawline where substantial volume is needed to give substantial change. Immediately, this filler works to add volume under the skin. Over time, this is one of the only fillers that produce long-term collagen by stimulating your body’s own natural collagen. So the end product is better than when you started. The natural results have been shown to last 12-15 months or more in many patients.

    But What About Implants?

Implants are still a great option once you are 100% positive that you are ready for a permanent enhancement. It is a more invasive procedure. It is sometimes necessary for those patients who have no bony facial structure where numerous amounts of fillers would be needed to give any substantial improvement. Dr. Emer's faculty of prolific plastic surgeons are highly capable of helping you achieve your ideal aesthetic goals. His team of surgeons can work to restructure the male face with surgical techniques such as implants, facelifting, and fat grafting; or with non-surgical methods such as soft tissue fillers, Sculptra, stem cells and/or PRP. Male facial sculpting has become one of the most sought-after procedures in Beverly Hills.
